KLBJ 590 AM Austin Texas

The Greenthumb Hour with Tom Spencer

Saturday 8am-9am

Tom Spencer, host of the Greenthumb Hour, has been answering the gardening questions of News Radio 590’s listeners since 1983. The Greenthumb Hour focuses on landscape and ornamental gardening with an emphasis on native plants and organic approaches. Spencer was trained as a landscape designer in Houston and worked in the nursery and landscape business for several years before switching to a communications career that included writing about gardening and hosting “Central Texas Gardener” for Austin’s Public Television station, KLRU.

“More than anything, gardening is something I do for the pure joy of it,” Spencer says. “I garden because it connects me to the earth and provides a tremendous creative outlet. The Greenthumb Hour is a wonderful way for me to share my love of gardening, to help folks out, and to learn a few things myself. Forgive the pun, but I feel that gardening has really blossomed in Central Texas over the course of the past twenty years here in Austin, and I am happy to have played a small role in its growth.”

Gardening Naturally with John Dromgoole

Saturday 9am-11am and Sunday 8am-10am.

John Dromgoole hosts the longest, continuously running, organic gardening talk show in the United  States. For the last twenty-five years on KLBJ AM 590, he has shared his passion and extensive knowledge of organic gardening. Originally broadcast on Saturday mornings, he eventually picked up Sunday mornings, too. His show, GARDENING NATURALLY, is unique in that it takes a non-chemical approach to gardening. John’s main focus is protecting the environment while enriching the soil and growing healthier plants. This has proven to be a popular subject for both listeners and advertisers, as the program sells out all advertising space every spring.

On Saturdays from 9 am to 11 am, listeners call in with their questions about problems with trees, shrubs, lawns, flowers and vegetable gardens. The show on Sunday, from 8 am to 10 am, has featured   such esteemed guest as the late Robert Rodale, one of the definitive influences of organic gardening: Wallace Black Elk, a Native-American steeped in ancient traditions: and John Jeavons, world-famous biointensive farming expert. The astronaut, Eugene Cernan, shared his experience of the overwhelming effect of standing on the moon and looking back at earth, while realizing how connected we are, and how we must take care of this planet. All guest are highly respectful of this planet and share in John’s vision of gardening naturally.
